My Background

I begun to colect coins more than 15 or 20 years ago, although I already had some coins at that time, and month by month and year by year my collection increased until now, when it "weights" around 1.5 kg (3 pounds). I have coins from China, Australia, Europe, Central and Northern America. I also have rare coins like these ones:
DDR (Germany) Mark 10   1975 Warschauer Vertrag 1955-1975 20 Jahre
Afrique -----      -----   1931 Exposition Coloniale Internationale
Romania Lei 500   1999 Eclipsa Totala de Soare (Total Eclipse of the Sun) - 11 August

History

Coins; Size=180 pixels wide

Back in 1993 or 1994, while I was a student in Timisoara, I heard that to an old stuff market, called Dambovita, people sell coins and banknotes. I went there with a school mate sharing the same passion for old money. We searched the market and saw all kind of stuff, some looked like they were new, and others were really rusted. In a corner an old man, had on a table a lot of coins. Some of them were in a good shape, and others barely looked like money. I ask the man about the price of the coins. Seeing his face I realized that he came with all this money without hoping that he will sell them. I had a little patience, and he finally decided the price for all of them. I accepted and took the coins. I think that this was the first time when I bought money from the market.

When I reached home, I checked carefully the money, piece by piece. Some of the coins were at that time in circulation in European countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Germany...), but others were older and not in circulation anymore. I checked the exchange rate for each circulating currency, and surprisingly, I realized that I payed less than the sum that I could obtain from a bank for them.

It was really a good deal!

Open Gate

In 1993 I found at Bastion in Timisoara the Numismatic Club, and I was really delighted, because untill then I didnt evaluate my coin and banknotes collection. I also hoped that I could become a member of this club. It was a good day outside to change impressions and thoughts about a hobby, especially money, so I entered the club. There was a large room, rather longer than wide, filled with a lot of tables and each table with a lot of chairs around it. But, surprise! There was no one in the club! I checked in the next day, and the day after that, and the day after that... Every day the door was opened. For whom or for what was it opened? Was it opened for numismats? I dont think so... Were they too proud of their collection to consider not sharing whith other Hobbists? Were they too old like their collection to be able to reach the club at least a day per week? Were they too lazy to go to the club? Were they to busy with every day business, not to have a little time for their passion? Is there any numismat in Timisoara? I quit asking about this issue! Do you know the answer?

In Drobeta Turnu Severin is no Numismatic Club. That is a reason why I put my collection on the web. I realize that I dont have an impressive collection, but if you have a real one and I have just the piece you missed, jut e-mail me, or call me. By the way, how can someone send collection money (coins and banknotes) via classic mail?

Ducu P. made us a pleasant surprise when he came to visit his old colleagues at the hydro power plant. He works now in South Corea at a very large shipyard as a welding technologies specialist engineer. He remembered my hobby as a money collector, so he brought me a large amount of coins. He was very careful regarding the emission year of every WON (South Korean won - KRW).

I have to update the list of coins.

Thank you, Ducu!
